What is a Personal Monetary Coach?

Let me start with a short story -

Geetha was born in a typical middle-class Indian family who grew up in the 90s. She is a well-educated girl and scored well in her academics. She secured a good degree and started earning well.

Till she started her job, all her expenses were taken care of by her parents. She didn't know much about money as all her needs were taken care of without even asking for it. Now that she started earning good money, she started spending on stuff that she has always wanted. Even though her parents took care of her needs they did not or could not spend on her every want. So, she did that for a year or two.

Meanwhile, she invested money in tax-saving schemes and in the post office as advised by her parents so that 80C (Indian Taxation component) component is taken care of. Her parents still managed all her other money!

Then, she got married and continued to work, which is good!

She thought her spouse has a good sense of money and so decided to delegate all her money-related investments to him.

Recently she completed 10 years of work! Wow, what a significant milestone! Everybody congratulated her.

One young colleague who looked up to her came and asked: Hey, can you help me with my tax filing and 80C investments? I am new to that so wanted to ask you.

Does she know how to do that?

Guess your answer!

In India, currently, financial literacy is not a part of basic academics until you choose to graduate in that field.

Many women in India, especially the working class have very little idea about managing money. Though they earn money themselves very few manage it themselves. They have a very short-term plan on how much money to make or how much they need. They are dependent on their parents or spouse for even simple expenses but there are exceptions as well.

This is where a personal monetary coach can help -

As a personal monetary coach -

  • I help people (especially women) understand and manage money.

  • I help them build daily trackers and help them spend on "needs" vs "wants".

  • I help in setting financial goals and achieving them.

Please note: I am not a SEBI-certified financial advisor. Please do your own research before doing any investments. I intend to only help in understanding and managing money and become financially literate.

Disclaimer: The above post was an illustrated story focusing on women. I work with clients of all genders.
